Planting vineyards in the
steeply sloped terrain of the Douro is no easy task. Here's a bulldozer creating
a patamar
(a sort of terrace) at Quinta de la Rosa's new property at Bandeiras in
the upper Douro. Patamares are quite
ugly but it's simply uneconomic to create the old-style walled terraces. Even
with bulldozers, planting this sort of
terrain is horribly expensive. Picture
taken July 2006.
