Footy talk

Apologies to the sensible readers who aren't obsessed by sport, but I have to get this off my chest. What on earth are Manchester City doing if they are seriously thinking of sacking Sven? (Here.) Despite the tail-end blip, this has been the best ever season for City in the premiership. But then remember that this is a club that sacked Tony Book after City finished 2nd and then 4th in what was then Division 1 back in the late 1970s, and then Peter Reid after two successive 5th place finishes. Both interventions led to a period of instablity and ultimately relegation. While the current craziness seems to be initiated solely by Thaskin, who must be naive, badly advised or both, we're talking about a club with a history for self-destructive behaviour.

Good to see two English teams in the final of the champions' league. I was hoping Liverpool would progress at the expense of Chelsea tonight, because then I could cheer for them in the final. Now I may be put in the uncomfortable position of having to cheer for UTD, which as a City fan will be quite hard. But I admire what they've done this season.

We were all cheering for Liverpool too (bar one individual individual) but guess we will all be barracking for united now in the Moscow game.

My kids and I really enjoyed this match however, much more interesting than the over technical passing thing that Barcelona tried to pull on us yesterday.

Disappointing to see two English teams in the final IMO. Surely the point of European football is to see different national styles against each other? Still, what we have of course is the dictatorship of money.

The Sven thing is ridiculous. Especially seeing as the captain and major players have all come out with strong backing for Sven and actually seem like they mean it. I can't see who MC will attract who's better than him anyway. This is the Hearts situation repeating itself. Thaksin needs to learn that success is based on stability.

Well done on overcoming the (tempting?) impulse to boo United in the final and recognising they can sometimes play amazing stuff.

Could you recommend a sparkling to be popped in the event Chelsea lose? (of course not to be popped a second too early: I once met a Bayern Munich supporter who opened his dearest bottle just a little prematurely in 1999)

I shall be cheering Chelsea, because they are truly the People's Club, bankrolled with money stolen from the (Russian) people. As a rich man's plaything rather than an investment plan or mass murderer's propaganda device, they are infinitely preferable to all other foreign-owned Prem clubs (except Villa). I can't stand Sir Fergie and his cheats XI- with a bit of luck they'll lose to an offside goal in the last minute. And please, please can someone send Rooney off for dissent for once (But not for treading on Carvalho's nads- that was perfectly understandable). Still it would be hard to imagine a final where so many are willing both sides to lose. Well done UEFA oligarchs.

I guess Anonymous is going to have to barrack for Man U, as Chelsea is the team with more English players? In which case, I will be cheering for the Scotsman's truly international team as well.

Yeah, I'll probably be for Utd, as they play better football in general. Would rather have had Barça, of course.

You are not a true Man City fan if you are going to cheer the scum on.
I too, would have preferred Liverpool vs Barca, but as it happens I have little choice but to support the team in Blue. Or better still maybe I will try for a ticket to Eastlands to see the mighty Rangers (what a finish!) in the "other" Euro final.
