This is not a big, spoofy wine. It's actually amazingly elegant and refined. Beautiful nose is aromatic and floral with spicy sweet cherry and plum fruit. Integrated, harmonious and profound. The palate is really elegant and smooth with open, midweight fruit and perfectly integrated oak. It's just a beautifully expressive wine that's hard to spit, combining softness and openness with real interest. 96/100 (tasted at The Sampler)

I was a banker in my former life. One client was the ex-Mr. Jean Phillips and insisted that he made the early vintages of Screaming Eagle in trash cans. Aren't people interesting?
Sounds like the best you can get out of the states!

When you say "insisted", Vinogirl, do you mean he tried to get you to believe it, or was it some decree issued to the winemaker?
Alex, tried to get me to believe it. Lots of small wineries make wine in trash cans in Napa (food grade Anon), so nothing unusual there...just post relationship sour grapes, forgive the pun. He said he made the first few vintages, the legend goes that Jean did...and then her wine came to the attention of Mondavi.
