Unusually for a high street multiple, Majestic sells by the case (mixed or unmixed)
only. However, the range has some real highlights and is uniformly strong, so selecting a
case here is not a big problem. There is usually a good range of wines open for tasting in
store, too. Probably the most dynamic of its peer group.
Marks & Spencer
Michael House, 47- 67 Baker Street, London W1A 1DN
Phone: 0207 935 4422
Website: http://www2.marksandspencer.com/storesplus/food/wineselector/
Website lists wines available in store, but you can't buy them
online. Solid if unexciting range.
Morrisons
Wm Morrison Supermarkets plc, J41 Industrial Estate, Carr Gate,
Wakefield, WF2 0XF
Website: www.morereasons.co.uk
Northern supermarket chain with a garish website. Reasonable
range of wines. Can't buy online from here.
Nicolas
157 Great Portland Street, London W1N 5FB
Phone: 0207 436 9338 Fax: 0207 637 1691
The French seem to have a more generous
view of profit margins than the British. Expect to pay well over the odds for dodgy
vintages at this unimpressive range of shops, usually located in wealthy areas where
people aren't going to realise (or care, perhaps) that they are being fleeced!
Oddbins
31- 33 Weir Road, London SW19 8UG
Phone: 0208 944 4400 Fax: 0208 944 4411
Website: www.oddbins.com
One of the most dynamic
of the high street retailers, and now (at last) they have a decent
website too (November 2001).
Safeway
6 Millington Road, Hayes, Middlesex UB3 4AY
Phone: 0208 848 8744 Fax: 0208 573 1865
Sainsbury's
Stamford House, Stamford Street, London SE1 9LL
Phone: 0207 695 600
Website: www.j-sainsbury.co.uk
Comes a close second to Tesco. Large,
generally relaible if not excing range that is pretty consistent across the board.
Somerfield
Somerfield House, Hawkfield Business Park, Whitchurch Lane, Bristol BS14 0TJ
Phone: 0117 935 9359

Tesco
Delamare Road, Cheshunt, Herts EN18 9SL
Phone: 01992 632222
Website: www.tesco.com/winestore/
One of the best of the supermarkets, with some
adventurous buying in the New World, less so in traditional European
countries. Recently launched new web-based 'winestore'.
Unwins
Birchwood House, Victoria Road, Dartford, Kent DA1 5AJ
Phone: 01322 272711 Fax: 01322 294469
Website: www.unwins.co.uk
Interesting range, but could do a bit better.
Waitrose
Doncastle Road, Southern Industrial Area, Bracknell, Berks RG12 8YA
Phone: 01344 424680
Website: www.waitrose.co.uk
Widely recognised as the best of the supermarket wine ranges. Some gems to be found
here; nice high end selections.
