The wines of Arcadia Vineyards
Impressive wines from Thrace, Turkey

Arcardia are based in Northern Thrace, near Bulgaria in northwest Turkey, which has a continental climate of cold winters and warm summers. They have a winery in the middle of their 35 hectares of vines, and don’t take any grapes from outside.

Although planning began in 2002, it wasn’t until 2009 that the first wines were made here.

I tasted the wines with Günes Yener, the winemaker, and Zeynep Arca Şalliel (pictured above), who co-founded Arcadia Vineyards with her father, Ozcan Arca.

The wines are consistently good.

Arcadia Finesse ‘Gri’ Sauvignon Gris/Pinot Gris 2011 Thrace, Turkey

Arcadia Finesse Sauvignon Blanc/Narince 2011 Thrace, Turkey
Just 5% of Narince, a local variety in this blend. Precise, bright and pure with some citrus and pear notes, as well as a bit of smokiness. Very crisp, clean and lively, with good acidity. 88/100

Pale salmon pink colour. This has a smooth mineral edge to the nose, leading to a lovely, textured palate with notes of spice, nuts and herbs. So elegant and a bit peppery. A savoury style. 91/100
