wines of Arcadia Vineyards
Impressive wines from Thrace, Turkey

Arcardia are based in Northern Thrace,
near Bulgaria in northwest Turkey, which has a continental climate
of cold winters and warm summers. They have a winery in the middle
of their 35 hectares of vines, and don’t take any grapes from
outside.
Although planning began in 2002, it
wasn’t until 2009 that the first wines were made here.
I tasted the wines with Günes Yener, the
winemaker, and Zeynep Arca Şalliel (pictured above), who
co-founded Arcadia Vineyards with her father, Ozcan Arca.
The wines are consistently good.
THE
WINES
Arcadia Finesse ‘Gri’ Sauvignon
Gris/Pinot Gris 2011 Thrace, Turkey
12.4% alcohol. Fresh, focused and bright with some mineral and
spice notes. Very crisp and fresh with hints of herbs. Lovely
precision here. Pure and fine. 90/100
Arcadia Finesse Sauvignon Blanc/Narince
2011 Thrace, Turkey
Just 5% of Narince, a local variety in this blend. Precise,
bright and pure with some citrus and pear notes, as well as a bit of
smokiness. Very crisp, clean and lively, with good acidity. 88/100
Arcadia Finesse Sauvignon Gris 2009
Thrace, Turkey
Fresh, intense nose is fine and bright. Precise and mineral with
lovely taut acidity and subtle herb and nut notes. 89/100
Aracdia Fresh Cabernet + Rosé 2010
Thrace, Turkey
Pale salmon pink colour. This has a smooth mineral edge to the
nose, leading to a lovely, textured palate with notes of spice, nuts
and herbs. So elegant and a bit peppery. A savoury style. 91/100
Arcadia Finesse Cabernet Franc/Merlot
Rosé 2011 Thrace, Turkey
Pale salmon pink. Taut, fresh and crisp with some mineral notes.
Crisp and dry with some subtle cherry fruit and nice savoury herbal
notes in the background. Lovely. 90/100
Arcadia Finesse Cabernet Sauvignon
2010 Thrace, Turkey
Supple and elegant with pure, fresh berry fruits and some black
cherry notes. Real restraint here: deliciously focused. 91/100
Arcadia Finesse Cabernet
Sauvignon/Cabernet Franc/Merlot 2009 Thrace, Turkey
Rich and spicy with some oak notes and a bit of tar and spice.
Full black fruits. Some grippy structure and notes of herbs in the
background. 88/100
