BURGUNDY 2012
NOTES ON BURGUNDIES FROM THE 2012 PRIMEUR TASTINGS - 33 producers and 142 wines reviewed

If you have the inclination, as a wine writer you can spend two weeks tasting Burgundy at the two-dozen en primeur tastings in London each January. The thought of spending two weeks of my time tasting cask samples (there are just a few bottled wines to assess) fills me with dread. Besides, although I am a true Pinot lover, and I’m hugely attracted to Burgundy as a wine region, I don’t think there is much prospect of me becoming a true authority on Burgundy in the near future. I’ll leave that up to the likes of Jasper Morris: it’s just about a full time job, such is the complexity of the task. Besides, the sort of people who buy Burgundy are usually pretty canny, and can taste for themselves.

Burgundy is different from Bordeaux in one key way: the top wines are made in tiny quantities, so getting hold of them is a problem. Because quality is largely dependent on terroir, and the best terroirs in Burgundy are well mapped out, there aren’t that many real surprises. Of course, some producers with great terroirs make bad wines, but it’s not as if you get mind-blowing wines from less interesting terroirs through skilled winemaking. So, the problem for consumers: the very top wines are usually from the top producers and top vineyards, and even if you wanted to buy them you’d have to wait your turn in the allocation lists of merchants, and commit before most of the experts have delivered their verdicts.

But as a wine lover, I want to have a look at the vintage at this early stage, so I go to a couple of the en primeur tastings. This year I chose Berry Bros & Rudd and Goedhuis, and for the benefit of any readers who’d like to know, here are my notes from these tastings.

The overall impression I came away with is that 2012 is a good vintage, but quite a variable one (it often is in Burgundy). I found some lovely wines, both white and red. But also some ordinary ones, and nothing is cheap in 2012. Burgundy is now properly expensive. En primeur, the 2012s are more expensive, in some cases, than 2005s on the shelf.

Pricing aside, I’m interested in the wines, and what’s interesting is how much stylistic differences among producers are showing – even eclipsing terroir and vintage effects. For me, it’s about finding producers whose style I like – those who I trust to make honest, authentic wines. With these producers, vintage and terroir differences suddenly become points of interest. I don’t want a perfect wine: I want an honest wine – one that tells me a story of a time and place.

Most of the samples tasting in these 20+ Burgundy en primeur tastings that are taking place in London are of wines taken from cask and bottled. These are not finished wines and the quality of sample preparation varies. Some reds, in particular, lose their vibrancy when treated this way. Journalists have to be careful not to make statements that are too definitive on the basis of such samples. With that caveat in mind, here are my notes: the scores are a range and out of 100, indicating the uncertainty of judgements at this early stage, and the variability of sample preparation.
