Castello di Bossi is a large Tuscan estate of more than 600
hectares (124 of these under vine), currently receiving some rave
critical reviews for its wines. Michael Palij of Winetraders (the UK
importer) sums them up well in his list: ‘They’re a bit flashy,
but hard to resist’. Brothers Marco (who I tasted the wines with) and Maurizio Bacci are in
control here at this rather idyllic-looking Tuscan property. For those
seeking some Tuscan idyll, there are sixteen apartments for hire on
the estate. (Retail prices in brackets.)
Castello di Bossi Chianti Classico 2000
Rich, savoury herby fruit on the nose. Good concentration of
savoury fruit on the palate with firm spicy tannins and good acidity.
Good concentration and reasonably complex, with potential for further
development. Very good/excellent (£12)
Castello di Bossi Chianti Classico Riserva ‘Berardo’
1999
From a single vineyard (starting with this vintage); a blend of
85% Sangiovese and 15% Merlot. Herby, spicy nose is rich and tarry,
showing fairly serious, opulent fruit. Concentrated chewy, savoury
palate with rich fruit and quite a bit of oak. Lovely if a little oaky.
Very good/excellent (£18.50)
Castello di Bossi ‘Corbaia’ 1999 IGT Toscana
The first of this estate’s two supertuscan wines, this is a
blend of 70% Sangiovese and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, with malolactic
fermentation in barrel. Rich fruit on the ripe, concentrated nose with
a tarry edge. The expressive palate is concentrated and savoury.
It’s tarry with firm tannins and high acidity. Quite challenging at
the moment. Very good+ (£28.50)
Castello di Bossi ‘Girolamo’ 1999 IGT Toscana
100% Merlot with malo in barrel. Deep coloured. Opulent, rich
herby/spicy fruit on the nose. Good concentration on the palate which
displays quite a lovely balance of concentrated spicy-tinged ripe
fruit with smooth tannins and good acidity. A big wine, but in
balance: nicely savoury and spicy. Very good/excellent (£27.40)
