New Douro 2004 tasting
Other wines

Chrestus 2004 Douro
Made from grapes grown in the Cima Corgo of the Douro, destemmed and matured in a mix of French, American and Hungarian oak barrels. Quite a fresh nose of herby dark cherry and red berry fruit. Expressive, with just a hint of tar and some oak in the background. The palate is midweight with nice savoury structure from the firm tannins and good acidity. Sweet cherryish fruit is countered by spicy structure, yielding a supple, drinkable food wine. Has some Douro personality; just lacks a touch of concentration and presence. Very good+ 88/100 11/06

Sedna Reserva 2004 Douro
From 60 year old vines in the Vale de Vilariça area of the Douro Superior. This has a distinctive roasted, spicy nose with some cherryish red berry fruit underneath. The midweight palate shows juicy red berry fruit with a spicy edge. Fruity, supple and drinkable with good acidity, some tannic grip and a touch of oak. Lacks concentration. Very good 84/100 11/06

Secret Spot 2004 Douro
This is a joint project between Gonçalo Sousa Lopes and winemaker Rui Cunha. It’s a single vineyard wine, but the intention is that the vineyard may change each year. This time it was made from 70 year old vines, with the grapes sorted, destemmed, crushed and foot trodden in lagars. It spends 14 months in new oak; 2650 bottles were made. A deep red purple colour this has an expressive nose of fresh black cherry fruit with liquorice, spice and a hint of tar. The palate shows supple dark fruits with nice freshness and quite a bit of tannin. The oak is in the background. Overall, a stylish wine with focused fruit and a good future ahead of it. Very good/excellent 90/100 11/06

Casa Burmester Douro Reserva 2004
A blend of Tourigas Nacional and Franca with some Tinta Roriz. Aromatically quite rich with perfumed, slightly violetty red and black fruits. The palate shows stylish, ripe, accessible fruit with a nice spiciness and some warming tannins on the finish. Sweetly fruited in a modern style, this is for current drinking. Very good+ 88/100 11/06
