The wines of Francuska Vinarija
Naturally made, terroir-driven wines from Serbia

Estelle and Cyrille Bongiraud (above) moved from France to the Serbian village of Rogljevo, drawn by the limestone soils, beginning here in 2003 and moving full time in 2007. Cyril should be able to spot a good terroir: he's a specialist vineyard soil consultant. And, working naturally, they are making some great wines. The vineyards are spread across three Serbian villages – Rogljevo, Smedovac and Rajac – which have 2000 years of winegrowing history. The wines are really lovely, made in a natural way with very little sulfur dioxide (total levels range from 10-15 mg/l in these wines).

THE WINES

Francuska Vinarija Obećanje 2010 Vallée du Timok, Serbia
This is made from an old clone of Gamay called Monchaud Petits Grains. It's supple and spicy with cherries and plums. Very pure and mineral with a nice savouriness. Such a lovely wine. 93/100

Francuska Vinarija Poema 2010 Vallée du Timok, Serbia
This is mostly Riesling, with some Graseniva and Tamjanika. Lovely ripe flavours of citrus, pear and spice. Mineral, textured and detailed, with lovely precision and depth. 93/100

Francuska Vinarija Tajna white 2011 Serbia
Appley nose. Lovely mineral palate with apples, citrus, wax, herbs and nuts. Generous, quite brilliant and quite edgy. 94/100

Francuska Vinarija Istina white 2009 Serbia
This is Riesling. Reductive, mineral. Apples and lemons with lovely detail. Fresh yet dense and detailed. 92/100

Francuska Vinarija Tajna red 2011 Serbia
Varietal Cabernet Sauvignon. Sweet, ripe and full with lovely cherries, plums and raspberries. Nice density with vivid black fruits. Very fruity style. 92/100

Francuska Vinarija Istina red 2011 Serbia
Vranac, Prokupac and Zacinjak. Textured and a bit oxidative with lovely cherry and ripe apple notes, as well as hints of spice, earth and minerals. A lovely wine. 92/100

Francuska Vinarija Poema 2009 Serbia
A blend of Riesling, Muscat, Tamjanika and Grasevina, from limestone soils. Very stony, minerally wine with nutty, waxy, appley notes. Restrained nose of pear and apple pie leads to a palate that is lively, textured and mineral. Quite a profound wine with pith and mineral notes, and lovely complexity. It's a tiny bit oxidative, but this works brilliantly in the context of this wine. 92/100
