Markus Fries has a relatively small vineyard holding of
4 hectares of vines in the Mosel, but is making some smart wines. The
fact that most of these are from the unusually warm 2003 vintages, and
were tasted quite youbg makes me reluctant to conclude too much from
this tasting – perhaps in time these ratings could rise a bit?
Still, a good performance and a name I’ll be looking for in the
future.
Markus Fries Riesling Trocken 2003
Very ripe forward nose with sweet lime-framed fruit. The palate is
savoury and intense with high acidity. Appealing. Very good+ 87/100
Markus Fries Riesling Trocken
‘Lesura’ 2003
Fruity, limey nose is taut and savoury. Palate is slightly floral
edged and savoury in a dry style. A pretty wine. Very good+ 88/100
Markus Fries Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese

limey, spicy finish. Dry. Very good+ 87/100

Markus Fries Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese
2003
Tight, limey nose. The palate is rich textured with ripe melon and
lime fruit. Good acidity and some minerality. Great concentration.
Very good+ 89/100
Markus Fries Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese
2001
Lovely expressive nose: limey, appley and sweet. The palate is
expressive with a minerally edge to the sweet honeyed fruit.
Delicious. Very good/excellent 91/100
Markus Fries Noviander Honigberg Riesling Auslese
2003
Fresh, taut limey nose. Very rich palate with laser-sharp acidity
offsetting the sweetness. Nice weight of fruit; this is quite hard to
assess so young. Very good/excellent 90/100
