When I first visited the Douro in
June 2002 I'd been primed that this was one of the most spectacular of
wine regions. Even so, I was surprised by just how stunning the
scenery was. In particular, the scale of this place was staggering:
I've been to scenic wine regions before, but it's hard to take in just
how big the Douro is, and with a fresh vista around each corner, it's
a photographer's heaven. I hope that the pictures here give you a feel
for this very special region—one that was recently designated a
