Picardy is a small 500 case winery in the Pemberton area of Western Australia. It’s owned by Bill and Sandra Pannell, pioneers in the Margaret River region who founded Moss Wood back in the 1960s. Pannell is especially keen on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, but also grows Shiraz, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. I was very keen on the Chardonnay, but unfortunately the well-reputed Pinot Noir wasn’t available for tasting on this occasion.

Picardy Chardonnay 2000, Pemberton
Wonderfully intense, nutty nose with rich herby/lemony fruit: full but fresh. The palate is fruit-driven, but with a nice herby edge. Impressive style. Very good/excellent

Picardy Merlot/Cabernet 1999, Pemberton
Deep coloured. Slightly roasted edge to the nose. Restrained but rich berry fruit on the palate with good concentration. Firm tannins and a spicy finish: really needs some time. Very good+

Picardy Shiraz 1999, Pemberton
Slightly roasted, spicy edge to the nose. Crisp, rounded berry fruit on the palate with good acidity. Restrained, fresh style – almost lean. Needs time or food. Very good+
