Agnes
and René Mosse specialize in vins naturels (natural wines) made from
vineyards surrounding the village of Saint-Lambert
-du-Lattay, just south of Angers in the Loire Valley. They farm their
vineyards—3 hectares of Cabernets Franc and Sauvignon, 7 hectares of
Chenin Blanc and a little bit of Gamay, Chardonnay, Grolleau Gris and
Grolleau Rouge
—using biodynamics, which they’ve been practising since 2001.
In winemaking they eschew cultured yeasts, chaptalization, enzymes and
modern winemaking trickery, adding just a tiny bit of sulfur dioxide
at bottling. It's not totally clear from their website whether they
add sulfur at any other stage in the winemaking process.
The wines are very impressive indeed, with real
personality and character.
They're available from Les
Caves de Pyrene in the UK and have importers in Belgium, Switzerland, USA, Japan and
Canada.
The
tasting notes below are from two separate tastings - one in April
2010, and below this, in May 2006.

and powerful citrussy flavours. Dry, intense, complex and lively with
some subtle nuttiness, and notes of apples and herbs. 93/100 04/10

Domaine Mosse Anjou Les Bonnes Blanches 2004
Chenin Blanc. Quite
a deep, minerally nose with herb and straw notes. The palate is fresh
and quite crisp but still with a good depth of herby fruit. Lovely
stuff. Very good/excellent 92/100 05/06
Domaine Mosse Anjou Le Rouchefer 2004
Another Chenin. Quite a deep colour. Really interesting nose:
fruity with herby straw notes that are so typical of dry Loire Chenin.
The palate is quite broad with a rich, smooth texture and some herby
complexity. Good acidity. Very good/excellent 91/100 05/06
Domaine Mosse Anjou Marie Besnard 2004
This is an old vine (65 year old) cuvée of Chenin from a
selection massale vineyard. It is fresh, fruity and lemony with some
herby depth on the nose. The palate is quite concentrated and full
with some fruit sweetness and nice acidity. Delicious stuff. Very
good/excellent 92/100 05/06
Domaine Mosse Anjou Rouge 2004
Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Deep coloured. Lovely full
bright fruit with a chalky minerally edge on the nose. The palate is
full, concentrated and fruity with mouthfilling intensity, nice
freshness and crisp, crunchy tannic structure. Lovely. Very
good/excellent 92/100 05/06
Domaine
Mosse Achillée mon Rosé 2005
A blend of Grolleau Gris, Grolleau Noir and Gamay, made in a sweet
style with 42 g/litre residual sugar. Sweet, plump and spicy with

richness. Interesting stuff. 05/06
