This 33 hectare family-owned
vineyard is owned by Thierry Michon, and has been running along
biodynamic lines since 1993 (certified since 1995). It’s located on
the Olonne island in the Vendée, on the coast, so it’s not really
part of any major wine region – although you could say it is closest
in style to bits of the Loire. Soils are clay and schist, supporting a
range of varieties including Pinot Noir, Gamay, Cabernet Franc and
Negrette (reds); Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay and Groslot Gris (whites). A
stylish line up indeed, with some real high points.
Domaine Saint Nicholas
‘Les Clous’ 2004 AOVDQS Fiefs Vendéens Brem
A blend of Chenin and Chardonnay. Very youthful tasting with nice
clean, slightly nutty fruit. Fresh and with good depth. Needs time.
Very good+ 87/100
Domaine Saint Nicholas ‘Le Haut des Clous’ 2003 AOVDQS Fiefs

slightly herby, cheesy nose is typical Chenin. Very expressive. The
palate shows lovely, herby straw-like Chenin character. Fresh and pure
with the oak not noticeable. Lovely weight. Very good/excellent 90/100

(4000 litres). Vivid fresh cherryish nose shows pure fruit. The palate
is vivid and assertive with good acid, some spice, and grippy tannins.
A vivid, fresh style with some potential for evolution. Very good+
