Wannop
Wine Consultancy started trading in Autumn 2001, and is based in Angus,
in northeast Scotland. It's run by Ben Fawcett, who has wine trade
experience stretching back nine years with companies such as Majestic,
Forth Wine, Peter Green and Gleneagles. Clientele includes restaurants
and also some private customers.
A
while back Ben sent me a copy of his list and six samples (notes
below). The list is impressive, and includes the likes of Marc
Kreydenweiss and Schlumberger (Alsace); Laroche (Chablis); Gros' Noré,
Tempier and Lafran Veyrolles (Bandol); Puech Haut and Grande Cassagne
(South of France); Pieropan, Gaja, Fontodi, Lageder and Antinori
(Italy); Cline, Seghesio and Ridge (California); Glenguin, Pikes and
D'Arenberg (Australia) and Huia (New Zealand). Any restaurant could
pick and extremely elegant wine list from these pages, and for private
customers the prices are pretty good, too.
Cesani Vernaccia
di San Gimignano ‘Sanice’ 2000
Late-picked Vernaccia blended with 10% Chardonnay. Quite a deep
yellow/gold colour. The nose displays a nutty, straw-like character
with a toasted edge. Very unusual nutty, savoury palate with lots of
davoury herby complexity and quite low acidity. It has an intense,
almost oxidised character. Quite a classy, unusual wine, full of
interest. Very good/excellent (£8.25)
Macrostie Chardonnay 1999 Carneros, California
Nicely packaged, this classy Californian Chardonnay has a
seductive, powerful nose of sweet peach and mango fruit. It’s
intense, and the new French oak is very much in the background. The
palate is very rich and tropical fruit-driven with some spicy
complexity. Highly concentrated but quite elegant. Sophisticated. Very
good/excellent (£17.50)
Domaine d’Aupilhac ‘Lou Maset’ 2001 Vin de Pays du
Mont Baudile
Attractive, smoky, slightly roasted edge to the nose with some
peppery, almost meaty fruit. Palate is quite fruity with sweet ripe
red berry fruits but with an attractive grown-up savoury pepper-spice
edge. The texture is quite rich and chocolatey. It will be interesting
to follow its progress. Very good+ (£7.99)
Domaine de Font Sane Gigondas 1999
This deep coloured wine has an attractive pepper spice nose with
some sweet herbal and animal notes adding complexity. Midweight spicy
meaty palate is nicely balanced with some tannic structure. A super
example of Gigondas. Very good+ (£10)
Springfield Estate Whole Berry Cabernet Sauvignon 2000,
Robertson
Attractive chalky, earthy edge to the nose with some vivid
blackcurrant fruit on the palate. Brightly fruited but slightly
austere: savoury with a medicinal, herbaceous edge. Despite the good
concentration, this herbaceous edge is a little off-putting. Very good
(£7.99)
Pieropan ‘Le Colombare’ 1999 Recioto di Soave Classico
A brilliant sweet wine. Herby, spicy nose with a tpuch of
thick-cut marmalade character and a lemony lift. Great balance on the
palate between the herby, spicy, marmaladey fruit and the honeyed
sweetness. Good texture and acidity, and an attractive bitterness on
the finish. Don’t serve this too cold. Very good/excellent
(£18/half bottle)
