Alvaro Pecorari’s work over the last decade has propelled Lis Neris into the leading ranks of Friuli producers. Lis Neris is located in San Lorenzo, between the Slovenian border and the Isonzo river, with more than 40 hectares under vine.

I’m keen on these wines. The Pinot Grigio has shown better in previous vintages – 2002 was quite tricky in this region – but the two wines from 2001 were showing brilliantly. Lots of character and flavour.

This is just a small section of their range, which includes varietal Sauvignons and Chardonnays as well as some reds. I’d be interested to try these. The wines are imported by Fields, the agency arm of Berry Bros & Rudd, so you should be able to find at least some of them for sale on Berry Bros website.

Lis Neris Pinot Grigio 2002 DOC Friuli Isonzo
Soft, lightly textured palate with some herbiness to the nose. Fruity, and a little simple, although this may put on weight. Very good+ 87

Lis Neris ‘Gris’ 2001 IGT Venezia Giulia Bianco
A single vineyard wine. Lovely meaty, bacon edge to the nose, which is varietally true and shows well integrated French oak. Richly textured palate is full of character and has a spicy edge. Very good/excellent 91

Lis Neris ‘Lis’ 2001 IGT Venezia Giulia Bianco
A blend of half Pinot Grigio with a quarter each of Sauvignon and Chardonnay. Savoury spicy nose showing lovely herby fruit together with a slightly smoky edge. The palate is savoury and dense with a lovely herby complexity to the fruit. Well integrated. Very good/excellent 92
