A family owned estate located in Breganze, a small town in
the foothills of the Dolomites, northwest of Venice. These are a
profound bunch of wines: I’d be interested to try the rest of this
producer’s portfolio now.
Maculan Brentino 2001
A blend of Cabernets Franc and Sauvignon with Merlot, aged for 16
months in barrique. This rich red wine shows a lovely blackcurrant
fruit nose – pure and sweet. The palate displays chocolatey berry
and black fruit in a modern, appealing style. Brilliant fruit quality.
Very good/excellent 90 (£9.99)
Maculan Fratta 2000
A blend of 85% Cabernet and 15% Merlot aged for 18 months in new
oak. Very deep colour. Intense, sweet black fruits on the nose with
some classy spicy oak. The palate is structured with a lovely
concentration of ripe fruit and some subtle spicy oak. A big wine with
great concentration of flavour. Very good/excellent 93 (£35.99)
Maculan Dindarello 2002
Made from Moscato grapes dried for a month and a half. It has an
almost overpowering grapey nose: floral and fruity with sweet
apricotty notes. The palate is very concentrated, fruity and sweet,
with lovely texture and acidity. Quite brilliant, this is a stunning
sweet wine. Excellent 95 (£7.99/half)
Maculan Torcolato 2000
Lovely herbal, caramelly complexity on the nose. The wonderful
palate shows a thick texture, grapey fruit and herbal complexity.
Great balance to this delicious sweet wine. Excellent 95 (£13.99/half)
