Isabelle and Guilhelm Bruguière's property shares the beautifully situated valley between the two peaks with Domaine de l'Hortus, and both have adopted the approach of using the hotter terroirs for Mourvèdre and the slightly cooler ones for Syrah and Grenache. This estate is quite small, with 12 ha of vineyards, but produces benchmark Pic St Loup. The Arbouses is more aromatic and pretty, while the Grenadiere cuvée is quite structured and ageworthy. [I bought some of both when I visited.] Viticulture is organic and winemaking is in a mix of demi muids and old foudres of 5000 litres.

Xavier Bruguiere

Mas Bruguière Les Mûriers Blanc 2010 Coteaux du Languedoc, France
80% Roussanne, 20% Marsanne. Precise, nutty, intense with lovely freshness and focus. A very bright white wine. 88/100 (05/11)

Cuvée Vinum de Calcadiz 2001, Coteaux du Languedoc
This is made from vines too young for Pic St Loup, and is a quaffable blend of Syrah and Grenache, no barriques. Dusty, caramel-edged nose: dry and spicy. Quite firm southern palate with dry, spicy tannins. ‘Southern’ styled. Very good (08/02)

Modern-style trellising with the Montagne de l'Hortus in the background

Mas Bruguière L’Arbouse Rouge 2009 Pic Saint Loup, France
Syrah/Grenache blend. Fresh, bright, meaty and precise with lovely fresh berry fruit. Meaty and bright on the palate with pure fruit. Some grip. A lovely wine. 91/100 (05/11)

L’Arbouse 2000, Pic St Loup, Coteaux du Languedoc
A blend of Grenache and Syrah, no barriques. Vivid, spicy, earthy nose is quite rich and meaty. Appealing. The earthy palate shows good concentration with firm tannins. An earthy wine. Very good+ (08/02)

Mas Bruguière La Grenadière Rouge 2008 Pic Saint Loup, France
From the oldest vineyards, this is 80% Syrah, with the balance Grenache and Mourv
èdre, aged for 18 months in oak. Really refined and quite elegant with precise cherry and berry fruit. Nicely elegant with some spicy depth and some minerality. A lovely expressive wine. 93/100 (05/11)

La Grenadière 2000, Pic St Loup, Coteaux du Languedoc
A blend of Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre which spends 12 months in barriques. Lovely meaty, spicy, earthy wine. Sensational nose with a rich edge, leading to a chunky, rich palate with lovely savoury, meaty character, and firm spicy tannins. Wonderful stuff/ Very good/excellent (08/02)
