Montirius is a sizeable 55 hectare estate that has been run by the same family for five generations. For the last 15 years Christine and Eric Saurel have taken their domaine in an organic direction, converting to biodynamics in 1996. They’ve taken things quite seriously: in 2002 a new winery was built, with vats built with concrete made from dynamized water. I liked these wines, although it seems a bit tough to assess a producer largely by their work in a very difficult vintage (2002).

Domaine Montirius Vaqueyras Blanc 2003
A blend of Grenache Blanc, Bourboulenc and Roussanne. This is fresh, crisp and fruity with good acid and nice weight. Very good+ 87/100

Domaine Montirius Vaqueyras 2002
Savoury and spicy with a slightly roasted, dry character. Chewy and dense. Very good+ 87/100

Domaine Montirius Vaqueyras ‘Clos Montirius’ 2002
Nice forward spicy nose. Good depth. The palate has an attractive weight and density with bold, savoury, spicy flavours. Very good+ 89/100

Domaine Montirius Gigondas 2002
Quite nice perfume here, showing spicy red fruits. The palate is spicy and full with nice density and supple spicy structure. Nice stuff. Very good/excellent 90/100
