From Austria’s south (Südsteiermark, also known as southern Styria), Polz are producing an impressive line-up of white wines (plus a few reds, which I haven’t tried yet). They have a reasonable 51 hectares of vines: enough to make a living, but not too much that they lose the quality focus. Erich and Walter took over running the estate in the early 1980s, and they are doing a seriously good job. Unlike the vineyard areas around Vienna where
Grüner Veltliner and Riesling rule the roost, southern Styria excels with the likes of Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris.

Polz Klassik Sauvignon Blanc 2004
Lovely fresh, grassy, herby nose with lovely fruit. The palate is herby and quite crisp. A nice fruity white. Very good+ 86/100

Polz Sauvignon Blanc Therese 2003
Nice fresh, grassy nose which is slightly herby. The palate is expressive with a herby edge and some softness. Quite subtle; there’s some complexity here. Very good/excellent 90/100

Polz Sauvignon Blanc Therese 2001
Restrained, focused grassy nose with some blackcurrant fruit. The palate has a developed, slightly herbal tinned pea edge. Otherwise it’s fresh and clean with nice pure fruit. Very good+ 87/100

Polz Hochgrassnitzberg Sauvignon 2003
Lovely expressive wine is fresh with some complexity on the nose – quite subtle. The palate is very expressive and complex with subtle herbiness and minerality. A fantastic wine with a lovely rich texture. Very good/excellent 92/100

Polz Grauburgunder 2003
Clean, fresh and fruity with a nice rich texture and a bready, spicy edge to the smooth fruit. Quite subtle, but no doubt this will evolve a bit. Nice stuff. Very good+ 89/100

Polz Hochgrassnitzberg Sauvignon Blanc Reserve 2003
Vinified in 80% new and 20% used oak. Lovely full complex nose with some well integrated oak – it’s full, herby and toasty. The palate is concentrated, bold and full with some nuttiness from the oak and lovely rich fruit. Herby and complex, this is a fantastic white in a bold style. Very good/excellent 93/100
