Primo Estate traces its origins back to 1973 when
Primo Grilli planted a vineyard 30 kilometres north of Adelaide, near
the coast. His son Joseph took an oenology course at Roseworthy
Agricultural College, graduating in 1979, which was also the first
vintage at the estate.
Joe Grilli has become known for his innovative
winemaking and predilection for unusual (by Australian standards)
grape varieties. These include the ‘Moda’ Cabernet Sauvignon
Merlot, made with the traditional Italian method of partial drying of
the grapes after picking. This was first produced in 1987. In recent
years they have been planting Italian varieties, including Sangiovese,
Barbera and Nebbiolo.
Primo Estate La Biondina 2002
An attractive Colombard. Fresh aromatic nose with a pretty fruit
character. Lovely rich-textured fruit on the palate with ripe peachy
notes. Some residual sugar? Very good+
Primo Estate Il Briccone Shiraz Sangiovese 2000
Appealing sweet ripe, liqueur-like berry fruit nose leads to a
ripe, sweetly fruited palate. Great concentration to this seamless
wine. Appealing. Very good/excellent
Primo Estate Joseph Cabernet Merlot ‘Moda Amarone’
2000
Sweet intense berry fruit with a spicy oak edge. Great
concentration on the intensely spicy, richly fruited palate. Some firm
tannins, too. Brilliant in a full-on style. Very good/excellent
Primo Estate Joseph Cabernet Merlot ‘Moda Amarone’
2000
Lovely sweet ripe fruit on the nose with a liquoricey edge. The
chunky palate shows seamless berry fruit along with good acid and nice
chalky tannins. Very appealing in a super-ripe style. Very
good/excellent
Primo
Estate Joseph Sparkling Red
Really lovely ripe chocolatey fruit here, which is nicely offset
by the fizz and acidity. Appealing with some sweetness on the finish.
Very attractive. Very good/excellent
