Highly regarded winemaker Álvaró Castro is one of the leading lights in the Dão region in central Portugal. He is the owner/winemaker of two estates in the region, Quinta de Saes and Quinta de Pellada. The style at both estates is similar, and leans towards the traditional.

Pellada 2000 Dão
Brightly coloured. Striking nose of vivid cherry fruit. The attractive palate shows plenty of  rich cherry/berry fruit with a spicy edge. Tasty. Very good+

Quinta de Pellada 1996 Dão
A blend of Tinta Roriz and Touriga Nacional. Attractive evolved caramel and spice nose is savoury with an earthy edge. The palate is chunky, spicy and savoury. Attractive in quite a traditional style. Very good+

Quinta de Pellada Jaen 2000 Dão
Slightly muted berry fruit nose. The palate displays chunky, spicy berry fruit. A rich style but with good balance. Very good

Quinta de Saes 1996 Dão
Evolved caramel and spice nose leads to a palate showing spicy fruit and some tannin. Attractive and balanced, this is a traditional styled wine that’s maturing nicely. Very good+
