Dr Dirk Richter’s wines are very fine, expressing what many of us would like to believe is terroir. I keep finding the word ‘minerality’ cropping up in my tasting notes; usually a positive thing, although I don’t think there is a direct connection between minerality in wines and the composition of the vineyard soil. From vineyard holdings of 15 hectares, this is a range of wines full of character, even in an atypical vintage such as 2003. 10 000 cases are produced annually.

Max Ferd Richter Estate Riesling 2003
Quite rich in style, but retaining some definition: melony fruit with a nice spicy edge. Good concentration. Very good/excellent 88/100

Max Ferd Richter Brauneberger Juffer Riesling Kabinett 2003
Very well defined limey, minerally nose. Lovely concentration on the palate, which is quite rich textured and minerally. Youthful. Very good/excellent 90/100

Max Ferd Richter Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese 2003
Extremely minerally, fresh nose which is taut and lemony. The palate is richly concentrated with lovely balance between the lemony fruit, melony sweetness and tight acidity. Nice definition. Very good/excellent 92/100

Max Ferd Richter Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese 2003
Distinctive lemony, minerally, savoury nose. Very rich and intense on the palate with good lightness of texture. Sweet, pure, minerally and quite distinctive. Rich but with a good balance – this is a concentrated wine. Very good/excellent 93/100
