Domenic Mondillo (Italian, not Spanish roots, so pronounce the 'll') had restuarants in Queenstown in the 1980s, and then worked as a viticulturist in Gibbston. He planted 12 hectares in Bendigo in 2001, 10 of Pinot and 2 of Riesling. First vintage was 2004. The wines are made at Quartz Reef.

THE WINES

Mondillo Riesling 2011 Central Otago, New Zealand
Lively and rich with sweet lemons and grapes. Accessible and fruity with a hint of sweetness. Quite delicious. 90/100 (02/14)

Mondillo Pinot Noir 2006 Central Otago, New Zealand
Warm, smoothwith sweet black cherries and plums, with nice texture. Quite autumnal, with notes of spice and minerals. Nice stuff. 92/100 (02/14)

Mondillo Pinot Noir 2012 Central Otago, New Zealand
Ripe, sweet and rounded with lovely textured berry and cherry fruit. Some distinctive spiciness, and a hint of ginger. Warm style. 93/100 (02/14)
