Although I'm usually quite generous in my ratings of Portuguese
wines (despite my enthusiasm, I try to remain objective), I was a bit
disappointed by these four wines from the Douro. I'd like to give them
a second chance before I make any firm conclusions.
Quinta do Portal Reserva 1996
A blend of three Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesca and Tinta
Roriz, aged in French and Russian oak. There's a slightly green leafy
character to the nose, with some herby notes. The palate shows chewy
tannins, and it's medium bodied with a dry finish and high acidity.
Good/very good
Quinta do Portal Grande Reserva 1996
A blend of Touriga Nacional and Tinta Roriz. The nose shows sweet,
rich, menthol notes from the new oak. The palate is medium bodied with
full, herby flavours and relatively high acidity. Very good
Quinta do Portal Tinta Roriz 1997
A leafy herby nose with a green acid streak leads to a medium
bodied palate with some sweet herby fruit. Quite interesting, but a
bit lightweight. Good/very good
Quinto do Portal Branco 2000
An appealing white wine with some interest. Shows a spicy, leafy
nose and a rich, herby, spicy palate with good acidity.
