New releases from Stellenbosch star Meerlust
I’ve written up the wines of Meerlust quite extensively here in the past, and most recently from a visit to the farm, which is on the fringes of Stellenbosch. They are famous for their grand vin, Rubicon, but all the wines here are worth attention. And they are fairly priced, too. These are some recent releases.
Meerlust Estate Red 2022 Stellenbosch, South Africa
Renamed from just ‘red’ to indicate that this is also an estate wine. This is fresh and bright but with some savoury spicy notes and a touch of dustiness. Real balance and freshness here. Great value for money. 93/100
Meerlust Merlot 2023 Stellenbosch, South Africa
Floral and bright with a subtle leafy edge to the vibrant berry fruits. Nice ripe cherry and plum fruit with sweet fruit with a nice acid line. 93/100
Meerlust Cabernet Sauvignon 2022 Stellenbosch, South Africa
Taut blackcurrant fruit with nice freshness and some structure. Grainy and grippy with brightness and focus. 94/100
Meerlust Rubicon 2023 Stellenbosch, South Africa
Lovely floral aromatics with vibrant cherry and plum. Fresh blackcurrant, fine green hints, lovely ripeness but also a long, elegant finish. Elegant, but will also age for a long time. 95/100
