Chianti Classico deep dive (5) dinner at Salefino Vino & Cucina in Siena

This was my first time in Siena, which is simply stunning. It’s almost entirely unspoiled, and is very old. After the obligatory aperol in the square, we ate at a really good restaurant: Salefino Vino & Cucina.

Salefino is a simply furnished restaurant on the edge of the centro storico in Siena. The simple décor is an appropriate prelude for a Tuscan meal that’s beautifully prepared, matched with a really good wine list.

So what did we eat and drink?

Scallop carpaccio, assymetrically served. No surprises here, but really delicious.

Lettuce with vegetables

naked ravioli (‘gnudi’) with ricotta, spinach and parmesan

Fish, pasta, calamari, potatoes

Tuscan rabbit with cream of red pepper

Roast codfish, chickpea cream, fried sage

Isole e Olena Chianti Classico 2020
14% alcohol. Textural and fine with sweet black cherry fruit. Polished with some liquorice and wax notes. Lovely fruit here, and showing some elegance. 94/100

Pomona L’Omino Vigna Pomino Chianti Classico Riserva 2019
14% alcohol. Very fine and fresh, and really expressive with bright cherry and plum fruit. Fine, bright and savoury with some spicy, mineral detail and good tannins. 94/100

Pork ribs cooked at low temperature with sweet and sour red onion

Pannacota, figs and canola siciliano
