Highlights: Jansz Tasmania Premium Cuvée NV
I remember when I first started out in wine buying quite a bit of Aussie fizz – Seppelts Great Western was a favourite. Now, Tasmania is the fizz hotspot, and this is a good one at a decent price.
Jansz Tasmania Premium Cuvée NV Tasmania, Australia
12% alcohol. This is really good. It’s a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir with some decent (but non-disclosed) time on lees, after hand harvesting and whole-bunch pressing, with full malolactic. This is a pale yellow colour and has aromatics of ripe peach, yellow plum and pear with some subtle toastiness and hint of nuts. On the palate there’s nice acidity with some fresh crystalline citrus, as well as ripe peach fruit and a fine spiciness. Everything is in its place here: nothing sticks out, and it has a luxurious, harmonious feel to it. Classy stuff and easy to appreciate, but also showing nice complexity. 92/100 (brilliant value in the UK at £18-ish from Waitrose, Hennings, ND John, Auswinesonline, Noble Green, Lekker Wines)
