Restaurants: The Palomar, Soho, London

The Palomar combines excellent food with a well chosen, interesting wine list.

The Palomar is part of the Studio Paskin group of hospitality venues that includes the Barbary in Notting Hill and the Mulwray.

The vibe is pretty chilled and the menu is creative, modern and borrows from a few gastronomic roots – they say that their food is influenced by southern Spain, North Africa and the Levant. This is a good start.

We opted for the £25 a head lunch menu, which is significantly cheaper than ordering à la carte.

The wine list here is good, versatile and quite deep for this sort of place, but it does get expensive quickly. I chose the Scar of the Sea Los Olivos Ranch Pinot Noir, which was £99 on the list (retail is around £35 for this, so it’s not an outrageous mark-up, but I do wonder whether they would make more money from their wine list if they didn’t use the same GP all through the list, and instead went for more of a cash mark-up on wines over £50).

The food is visually beautiful and the flavours are there, too. A really good experience, but a little punchy price wise because I couldn’t resist ordering the Scar of the Sea – it’s a beautiful wine.
