Herdade do Portocarro, interesting wines from Portugal’s Setúbal Peninsula

Website: https://www.portocarro.com/en/home

Portocarro is based in the Terras do Sado region of the Setúbal Peninsula, not far from Lisbon. I tasted with José da Mota Capitão, the owner, at the Simplesmente Vinho festival in Porto, February 2026. Of note: their work with rare variety Galego Dourado, and also the only Portuguese Sangiovese that I know of.

Herdade do Portocarro Figas 2022 Setúbal Peninsula
60 year old Fernão Pires vines, on their own roots, picked early. Complex linear nose with crystalline citrus fruit. Lovely textured palate is bright but with lots of flavour – lime and table grape. Lovely. 94/100

Herdade do Portocarro Partage Galego Dourado 2022 Setúbal Peninsula
There are just 20 hectares of Galego Dourado left in Porugal, and most is used for Carcavelos, a fortified wine. This has a honey and citrus nose. The palate is complex, layered and mineral with nice presence and weight. Complex, stony and mineral. 94/100

Herdade do Portocarro Geronimo 2022 Setúbal Peninsula
Sercial and Galego Dourado are the varieties here. Full yellow colour. Concentrated stony and detailed lively citrus fruit with lots of presence. Really vivid and fresh. Pithy and energetic. 95/100

Herdade do Portocarro Como Deus Manda Castelão 2023 Setúbal Peninsula
Bright, tart, nice vivid cherry fruit with juiciness and sour cherry on the finish. 93/100

Herdade do Portocarro Sangiovese 2023 Setúbal Peninsula
Juicy bright tart and savoury with nice intensity and a sour edge. 92/100
