Some top Chardonnays from Baden, Germany

Baden is a long, thin wine region, and is Germany’s most southerly, located on its western border with France. Hop over the Rhine and you’ll find it sort of mirrored by Alsace.

Baden is a sizeable region, with 16 000 hectares, and is the country’s most important region for Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), which makes 40% of the plantings. Chardonnay is a relatively minor player, but on this showing, it’s worth looking out for.

I’ve visited just once, and didn’t explore extensively, so I was really pleased to get to try this set of Baden Chardonnays at the recent VDP tasting in Wiesbaden. These are all Grosses Gewächs, and there are some stunners here. As soon as I got home, I went online and bought a couple of bottles of Chardonnay from Bernhard Huber!
