This was my first time out to Deptford, but it was worth the excursion. Marcella isn’t fancy, but it is very, very good. The space has a lovely sparse but stylish feel, and there’s a short menu of Italian deliciousness. The wine list is also short and very functional, with some nice natural things, but also some more conventional offerings.

We went veggie, and started off with hispi cabbage with romescu (top picture). Which was excellent. We also had the excellent burrata, garnished with the sweetest small tomatoes and some anchovies.

Two larger dishes also impressed: a bull’s heart tomato on a base of beans; and a really nicely cooked spaghetti with some aubergine.

Wine? We opted for the excellent Muscadet Amphabolite from Jo Landron (2020 vintage and weighing in at just 11.2% alcohol. This has lovely texture and drinkability, and it’s good value, too.
