Weingut Thörle: Impressive new wave German wines from this Rheinhessen estate

Website: www.thorle-wein.de

Thörle is a family domaine based in Saulheim in the Rheinhessen, and since 2006 it has been run by Christoph and his brother Johannes. The vineyards are managed organically, and the domaine is being taken in a biodynamic direction. Soils are interesting and varied, with light clay, limestone, red sandy loam and even flint and schist. I met with Christoph recently to taste through the range.

Christophe Thörle

All are short ferments, and Christoph does skin contact for the single-vineyard wines. 90% of the production is fermented in stainless steel and 10% in barrel, and natural ferments are practised.

THE WINES

Thörle Riesling Dry 2021 Rheinhessen, Germany
12.5% alcohol. This is a blend of parcels planted on slopes in Saulheim on loess and limestone soils. 16 hours skin maceration before pressing, and then fermentation and ageing in stainless steel, bottles with 4.8 g/l residual sugar. Taut, linear and fine with a mineral line and good acidity, as well as pure citrus (lime and lemon). Nice precision here. 92/100

Thörle Riesling Probstey Dry 2021 Rheinhessen, Germany

Thörle Riesling Holle Dry 2021 Rheinhessen, Germany
150-220 m above sea level. Late harvested fruit given 12 h skin contact, 50% fermented in barrel, 50% in stainless steel, with wild yeast. Then long ageing on lees. 45% limestone here, and the vines suffer a bit from chlorosis. Small yields. Very taut and mineral, with some chalky notes. Fine, pure and quite structured with a salty tang and an eternal, slightly spicy finish. This is very serious. 96/100
