Highlights: two from Monterosola, an organic Tuscan winery

This is an organically farmed estate of some 25 hectares located between Bolgheri on the coast and Chianti, in Tuscany. It was purchased by the Thomaeus family from Sweden in 2013, who took it in its current organic direction, and also did some extensive renovations. Winemaking consultancy is from Alberto Antonini.

Monterosola Primo Passo Tosacana Bianco 2018 Tuscany, Italy
14% alcohol. A blend of Grechetto, Manzoni and Viognier. Beautifully textured with soft pear and peach fruit as well as hints of mandarin and almond. There’s no oak influence here, and the mid palate has real breadth with softness but also good balance. 93/100

Monterosola Corpe Notte Toscano Rosso 2017 Tuscany, Italy
14.5% alcohol. 70% Sangiovese, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, fermented in concrete then aged in small French oak. Sweet, ripe and expansive with nice strawberry and cherry fruit as well as some fine, spicy tarry notes that take me immediately to Tuscany, and a slight balsamic hint. Ripe with some warmth and some notes of dried herbs, as well as liqueur-like fruit notes. This has developed nicely and the tannins have softened well: it gives Tuscan elegance but also tastes of sunshine. 93/100
