A Beaujolais study with some stunning expressions of Gamay
These are seven great examples of Gamay from Beaujolais that I showed in a masterclass today. I really liked them all.
Jean-Paul Brun Terres Dorees L’Ancien 2021 Beaujolais
12.5% alcohol. Fresh and fine, this shows lovely chiselled sweet pure red cherry and plum fruit, with a bit of grip. Stylish and elegant. 93/100
Domaine Mee Godard Morgon Corcelette 2015 Beaujolais
13.8% alcohol. The result of a hot vintage, but this dense wine has aged really well. Grippy, with sweet black cherries, nice spiciness and a lovely structural component. Has a stony, grainy twist with good tannins. Bold style. 94/100
Lapierre Morgon 2021 Beaujolais
12.5% alcohol. Lovely presence here. Fine and elegant with sweet cherries, plums and some strawberry richness. Nice fruit weight, and quite elegant, but it has some grippy structure, too. Has life, energy and nice purity. 95/100
Jean-Louis Dutraive Domaine de la Grand’Cour Brouilly 2021 Beaujolais
12.5% alcohol. Very pale in colour, this is sappy and sweetly elegant with red cherry fruit aromas. The palate is smooth and fine grained, concentrated and light at the same time with amazing elegance and finesse. So beautiful, this is an infusion style showing silky texture. 96/100
Du Grappin Côte de Brouilly 2020 Beaujolais
13% alcohol. Lovely concentration, freshness and elegance here. Some grippy structure under the sweet black cherry and raspberry fruit. Lovely purity: fine and expressive. 93/100
Château du Moulin-à-Vent Les Vérillats 2018 Beaujolais
13% alcohol. So refined, pure and textural with elegant but bold cherry and raspberry fruit, showing fine-grained texture. Pure and lively with amazing depth. Very fine. 94/100
Jean-Marc Burgaud Morgon Côte-du-Py 2020 Beaujolais
13% alcohol. Amazing purity and depth of fruit here with nice grip and presence. Has lovely fruit expression with good structure, and an inky saline twist. Ripe, fresh black cherries and plums. Lots of ageing potential. 94/100
