Crozes-Hermitage (11) Domaine Delhome
I met with Romain Delhome of Domaine Delhome to taste through some wines. Delhome built their winery in 2019. The family have had vineyards for five generations but used to sell all the grapes to the Cave de Tain cooperative. In 2019 they took all their vineyards (16 hectares) out. They are all in the northern part of the appellation, which is the original part, with some slopes and different soils to what is now the main part.
Domaine Delhome Crozes-Hermitage Blanc Loess 2023
13.5% alcohol. Organic. Beautiful harmony here with a saline framing to broad but balanced ripe pear and apricot fruit. Real volume in the mouth with nice depth of fruit, finishing with a fine, mineral, spicy dance on the palate. Impressive stuff. 95/100
Domaine Delhome Kaolin Crozes-Hermitage Blanc 2023
This is named after the soil type, Kaolin clay, which is found just in some parts of the appellation. This is from Larnage, and it is 100% Roussanne, planted in 2017, first vintage 2023. Initially Romain planted this as a blending component, but after he tasted the first wine he decided it had to be a separate cuvee. Fermented and aged in barrel, 5% new. Full yellow in colour. Bold but with nice peach and pear fruit as well as some honey, lanolin and spice. Very stylish with nice focus and depth. Has a salty, spicy edge to the fruit. 94/100
Domaine Delhome Boréal Crozes-Hermitage 2022
This is from granite hillsides in Larnage and Gervon. 75% barrel aged, 25% stainless steel. Lovely density here with a granite-like character, showing bright, dark, savoury black fruits with brooding black cherry and crushed rock notes. Some spice, too, and firm tannins. Brooding, intense and precise. 95/100
Domaine Delhome Alt 330 Crozes-Hermitage 2022
From old vines in Kaolin soils in Larnage. 20 months in oak, 15% new. Fresh, fine and direct with a bright peppery edge and grainy tannic structyre. Nice freshness here with lovely black fruits and a salty character. Refined but powerful. 95/100
