Aldo Conterno: tasting the range from this celebrated Barolo producer

I was in the right place at the right time to taste these wines. They’d been opened earlier for a tasting at East End Cellars in Adelaide, and I was there after hours so we had a run through them. These are my note – not the most extensive, but a great chance to try through the range.
Aldo Conterno is based in Bussia, in Monforte d’Alba, and they have three beautifully situated crus, Cicala, Colonnello and Romirasco, which they bottle separately. They have 25 hectares of vines, and vinification is in large format Slavonian oak, although the wines do taste relatively modern in style.

Ripe powerful and rich, cherry and spice, some oak. Overdone for me. 90/100

Nebbiolo with some Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Barbera. Rich, dense, refined – rich with nice tannins, black cherries and spice. Textural and expressive. 94/100
Aldo Conterno Conga Tre Pile Barbera d’Alba 2020 Piemonte, Italy
14.5% alcohol. Rich bold warm and spicy. Dense and ripe with a lovely spicy, rounded personality with a sour cherry finish. 92/100

Dense, spicy, leathery with sweet berry and cherry fruit. Rich and ripe with nice tannins and some fine spices. Bold and full. 94/100

Fresh and fine with raspberry and cherry fruit with some grip. Very fresh and also some richness. Good structure and focus. 95/100
