Herrenhof Lamprecht: impressive wines from volcanic Styria, with a particular focus on Furmint and field blends

Back in the day, Herrenhof Lamprecht, now a wine estate in Vulkanland Steiermark (Austria) was a monastery. There’s a lot of history here, but for the current phase wine production started in 2005, just over 20 years ago. Now there are 11 hectares of vines here, including 3 hectares of their speciality, Furmint.
I tasted these wines with Gottfried Lamprecht. He makes all the wines in 600 litre barrels, and half the oak for these comes from his own forest. The wines are naturally made, but there are some sulfur dioxide additions before bottling.
These wines are really impressive.

This is Furmint. Bright and linear with nice energy. Great acidity. Pure and transparent. 90/100
Herrenhof Lamprecht Furmint von Sandstein 2023 Vulkanland Steiermark, Austria
Stony and linear with vivid fruit. Nice acidity here. Fresh with good texture and purity. 91/100

Textured with nice depth to the pear and citrus fruit, with a mineral twist. Nice layers of flavour here with great texture. 93/100

This is Pinot Blanc. Linear, showing finesse to the citrus and pear fruit with a touch of peach. Great precision and finesse with lovely weight. 94/100
Herrenhof Lamprecht Riesling Pax Dei 2023 Vulkanland Steiermark, Austria
Normally the Riesling goes into the field blend, but in good years this is bottled separately. From sandstone soils. Lively and pure with textured lemony fruit. Textured with some stony, mineral notes and real finesse. 94/100
Herrenhof Lamprecht Buchterberg Gemischter Satz Weiss 2023 Vulkanland Steiermark, Austria
This is a field blend (with some old pre-phylloxera varieties in the mix), something that used to be common in Styria. Two years in oak. Complex and layered with nice concentration, showing lovely density, bold crystalline citrus notes and some salinity. Concentrated and really fine. 95/100

Salty and lemony; pure and fine. Has nice texture and presence and tastes really harmonious. Lovely stuff. 95/100

They buy these grapes, which come from 90 year old vines. Ungrafted field blend. Concentrated, mineral and fine with pear and citrus fruit. Very fine and mineral with good tension. 95/100

This is Pinot Gris, with two years in oak. Supple and bright with mandarin and citrus, as well as spice and pear. Layered with lovely acid line, nice salinity and a hint of apple. 94/100
Herrenhof Lamprecht Buchterberg Rosé 2024 Vulkanland Steiermark, Austria
Field blend of red grape varieties. Supple and fine, and slightly saline. Crystalline with red cherry and pear fruit, as well as some pear and apple. So lovely. 93/100
Herrenhof Lamprecht Pinot Noir Rosé 2022 Vulkanland Steiermark, Austria
Deep orange/red in colour. Leafy edge to the bright cherry and pear fruit with nice tannins and some spiciness. Lovely texture to this wine. 93/100

A field blend, 30 days on skins. Supple and bright with lively red cherry fruity spice and some pepper. Nice weight and intensity with lovely direct fruit. Very stylish and textural. 94/100

Floral and fresh with nice cherry and raspberry fruit. Bright with great energy. Juicy, brisk and chalky and mineral, with real focus and intensity, but also elegance. 94/100
