Famille Morin, an impressive Beaujolais domaine based in Chiroubles

Chiroubles-based Famille Morin is making some excellent Beaujolais wines. I tasted with Théo Morin at an event run by their UK importer Woodwinters.
I was really impressed by these wines from Famille Morin, who are based in one of the most interesting Crus in Beaujolais, Chiroubles. This is a cru with higher altitude and almost all granitic soils (you might be surprised to learn that there’s quite a bit of variation in Beaujolais and it’s not all granite soils), and it’s hilly.
Théo Morin, who runs the domaine with his parents, says that it’s complicated working the slopes, which can be 25-40%, and this means lots of manual work, especially because they farm organically. They also do some agroforestry. Most of the reds are made with carbonic maceration of around 10 days, and then they press and finish off the ferments in the juice phase at low temperatures.
