Justino’s Projects, Madeira, Portugal

This was a really interesting chance to try some special Project wines from Madeira producer Justino’s. The wines were tasted at the Glu Glu festival in Coimbra, Portugal.

Justino’s PXO Listrão 2022 DOP Madeirense, Portugal
11% alcohol. This is the first release of this wine, and to date the only one. 1300 bottles produced, half in a 500 litre barrel and half in stainless steel, and the grapes from from the island of Porto Santo. Bright, lively and lemony with nice citrus fruit and some stony, mineral notes. So fresh and pure with real focus to the fruit, and some saltiness. 93/100

Justino’s Biologico Tinta Negra 5 Years NV Madeira, Portugal
This is the first fortified Madeira to be labelled organic. 2 casks aged for 9 years each. Complex, spicy and raisiny with nice depth and complexity. Layered and full of interest, with a fine spicy finish. Quite dry for a Madeira. 94/100

Justino’s Fanal Achada do Louro Extra Reserve 15 Years NV Madeira, Portugal
This is a single-vineyard wine, planted to 90% Sercial and 10% Terrantez. Complex, linear and spicy with mineral, crystalline citrus and marmalade notes. Tangy and intense. So bold, lively and spicy, and quite dry (just 33 g/litre sugar). 95/100

Justino’s Fanal Lombo da Igreja Extra Reserve NV Madeira, Portugal
This is 22 years old and it’s medium sweet, blending Bual (77%) with Complexa (23%, a rare red grape variety). 76 g/litre sugar. Complex, spicy and lively with some sweetness. Notes of raisin and cherry and marmalade. This is quite brilliant, and really lively. 94/100
