Watching the Aldeburgh moonrise with Champagne: Lanson Le Black and Heidsieck & Co Monopole
On a recent trip to the Norfolk and Suffolk coasts we sat on the beach at Aldeburgh as the sun set to drink Champagne. Little did we realise that we were about to witness the moon rise over the sea. So we headed back to the co-op and bought another bottle of Champagne, staying until it was dark. It was quite a moment. Unplanned and almost perfect.

So what were the Champagnes like?

Champagne Lanson Le Black Creation 258 NV France
12.5% alcohol. This is 68% from 2018 with 32% reserve wines, disgorged in September 2024. Beautifully put together with bright cherry and citrus fruit as well as a touch of apricot. The sweetness from the dosage is nicely countered by a slight sour cherry and bitter twist. This is fruit driven with just a hint of toasty, nutty character. Combines drinkabilaty and accessibility with a hint of seriousness, and the focused acidity makes this a grown up drink. 91/100 (£41 from Co-op)

Champagne Heidiseck & Co Blue Top Monopole NV, France
This is fruity and bright with a bit of toasty richness, as well as almond, pear and a touch of apricot. This isn’t complex but it’s fruity, tangy and easy. There’s good concentration and a touch of nice sourness on the finish. 88/100 (£23 Co-op)
