Pecne Te, a Swiss-owned winery in Mendoza, Argentina

I like serendipity. I was sent these samples to taste by the partners in the winery, who used to work with my ex-wife’s brother Cliff, who works as a banker in Geneva. The Pecne Te winery is based in Mendoza, Argentina, and the winemaking is in the hands of one of Switzerland’s leading winemakers, Philippe Bovet. The wines are nicely packaged, and it’s an interesting range. I was particularly taken by the less expensive Torrontes, which is beautiful.

Pecne Te Sauvignon Blanc 2019 Mendoza, Argentina
13.6% alcohol. Good concentration here: it’s rich, rounded and textural with nice smooth pear, citrus and peach fruit. There’s a nice purity to the fruit, with a very smooth palate and a bit of richness on the finish. 89/100

Pecne Te Torrontes 2019 Mendoza, Argentina
14% alcohol. This is beautifully floral with great concentration in the mouth. Rich and balanced with sweet lychee and table grape notes, as well as some lush, sweet tropical fruit character. There’s some mango, here, too: a really appealing expression of Torrontes. 91/100

Pecne Te Torrontes Gran Reserva 2018 Mendoza, Argentina
14% alcohol. A really rich, oaky Torrontes, with a grapey richness and some spicy vanilla notes. There’s a bit of pithiness, too. Has richness and, if you like oak, this could be for you. To my palate, the oak sticks out. 87/100

Pecne Te Syrah 2019 Mendoza, Argentina
14.4% alcohol. This is supple and rounded, with some nice fresh cherry and berry fruit. It’s digestible and well balanced, with some spicy framing to the rounded fruits. Ripe and generous, but with a bit of grip. Not a big wine – more of a well balanced, drinkable wine with some presence and structure. 89/100

Pecne Te Bonarda 2018 Mendoza, Argentina
14.5% alcohol. This is rounded and supple, with sweet berry fruits and some black cherry, as well as some fine spicy notes. There’s a lushness to the fruit which is really appealing with some peppery hints as well as smoothly concentrated fruit. Generous and attractive. 89/100

Pecne Te Malbec 2019 Mendoza, Argentina
14.2% alcohol. There’s nice depth here with sweet, lush cherry and berry fruit. It’s ripe but there’s freshness, too, with a silkiness to the lush black fruit. This is really appealing with lovely sweetness to the fruit. Balanced with no oak influence. 90/100
