Highlights: Mullineux Iron Syrah 2018 Swartland, South Africa

Mullineux is one of the Swartland’s most important wineries. In 2011 they launched two terroir-specific Syrahs: Schist and Granite. In 2012 a third was aded – Iron. This is from a parcel of middle aged bush vines on iron-rich Koffieklip soils, west of Malmesbury. I tasted the latest release, 2018, at Handford Wines last week with Greg Sherwood, and was impressed. It was the last of the drought years, but the vineyard has delivered, despite being under stress.

Mullineux Iron Syrah 2018 Swartland, South Africa
Concentrated and intense with sweet lush blackberry and black cherry fruit. It’s salty and mineral with nice inky fruit. This shows great concentration with some floral notes, some meatiness, and blending freshness and ripeness in a beautiful way. Lots of potential here. 95/100
