Highlights: Viña Leyda Syrah Reserva 2019 Leyda, Chile

I visited Viña Leyda back in 2010, and at the time I described them as one of Chile’s most exciting wineries. Their website is here. One of their great talents is for cool-climate Syrah, and this is a really lovely wine that represents amazing value for money. If you are looking for crunchy, peppery, fresh Syrah, this is definitely one to seek out.

Leyda Syrah Reserva 2019 Leyda Valley, Chile
13% alcohol
£10 Co-op
This is impressive, especially as it’s on promotion at regular intervals at £8. It’s fresh, pure and vivid with peppery black cherry fruit, showing some grainy, chalky texture and a bit of tar and black pepper on the finish. It’s cool-climate Syrah at its fresh, peppery best, with a savoury twist to the finish. Youthful, vital and really pure, and very much in a modern Crozes-Hermitage style. I’d love people to try to guess the origin blind. 92/100
