Harrow & Hope Blanc de Blancs 2017 England
12% alcohol. This is from chalk and flint soils above Marlow in Buckinghamshire, in the Chiltern Hills. It’s 100% Chardonnay with 95, 548 and 76 clones, and half the base wine was aged in oak. Aged on lees for 40 months then disgorged in July 2021 with a dosage of 9 g/litre. Farming is organic but not yet certified (this is hoped for 2023). Good concentration here with high acidity supporting layered citrus fruit. Fresh and intense with some grapefruit and fine herbal hints. The barrel ferment isn’t obvious, but I suspect it helps knit the taut fruit together. Yet to show any overt toastiness, but there is a bready hint on the finish. This is really good: I love the acid line. 92/100
