Highlights: two from Karl Haidle, Würrtemberg, Germany

Karl Haidle was founded in 1949 by the famous gymnast of the same name. It’s now in the hands of the third generation, Moritz Haidle, who farms biodynamically and is a graffiti artist.

Karl Haidle Lemberger Bunter Mergel 2021 Würrtemberg, Germany
12.5% alcohol
£17.00 The Good Wine Shop
This is so lovely: fresh and delicate with bright cherry and raspberry fruit, it’s a lighter style red that’s best served chilled a bit. But it’s not lacking in complexity: there’s a fine chalky, gravelly edge to the supple red fruits with some iodine savouriness and a hint of sappy green. The core of this wine, though, is bright fruit, supported by good acidity. Quite lovely. 93/100

Karl Haidle Lemberger Stettener Hader 2020 Würrtemberg, Germany
12% alcohol
£24.50 The Good Wine Shop
This has a wonderfully bright nose of gravelly black cherry fruit with some raspberry, and also some floral overtones. The palate is fresh and crunchy, with good tannins, bright acidity, and masses of pure fruit. It’s fresh, primary and unfurled and has a bright future ahead of it. A brilliant example of Blaufränkisch. 94/100
