Video: Bastard Hill, a special vineyard in Australia’s Yarra Valley, is reborn under the ownership of Giant Steps

The Bastard Hill vineyard was planted by Ray Guerin in 1987. It’s high up in the Yarra Valley (Australia), and is a marginal site, originally planted with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay for sparkling wine. Over the years it has made some classic wines, but of late its potential has been unrealised. Bought by Giant Steps in 2022, now some proper investment is being made and the first Bastard Hill wines from Giant Steps, the 2023s, have just been released. This is a film of the launch party, where Ray Guerin introduces the site and tells us about the history, and winemaker Melanie Chester shares why she thinks it’s a special place.
