Vasse Felix Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 Margaret River, Australia
14.5% alcohol. This is the 50th release of this wine which has been made continuously since 1972 (Vasse Felix are one of the pioneers in this region, established in 1967). It’s aged for 17 months in French oak, 37% of which is new. This is a taut, compressed, ageworthy Cabernet with hints of mint, eucalyptus and a twist of coconut as well as red berries and a touch of blackcurrant on the nose. On the palate it’s focused and fresh, with taut blackcurrant and red cherry and cranberry notes, as well as some dusty tannins. The tannins seem very fresh, brought into focus by the keen acidity. This has such balance and vibrancy, and the eucalypt and green notes integrate really well. Give this cellar time and it could be an Australian classic. I love the way it avoids overripeness and an obvious sweet fruit profile. 94/100 (available in the UK from Majestic Wine, £34.99 or £26.44 mix six price)
