Restaurants: Sargasso, Margate (Kent, UK)

This is an absolute gem. If you live in London, get yourself a booking here, take the (fairly lengthy) train ride down to Margate, and be thrilled by the experience of eating amazing food and drinking superb low-intervention wine in a beautiful setting.

Sargasso is a small restaurant tucked into the harbour wall in Margate. This is an interesting seaside town, full of contrasts, and famous as the hometown of artist Tracy Emin. On the Kent coast, it has neighbours Faversham, Whitstable, Broadstairs and Ramsgate, which are all interesting places to visit.

The first time I visited was a bright but chilly winter’s day. The second was late summer, and another sunny day. That time we lunched well, and then walked to Ramsgate via Broadstairs, which is highly recommended. In winter, if the weather is terrible then sometimes Sargasso has to close because of the sea crashing over the harbour wall.
Food is lovely: small plates, focusing on good natural ingredients, skilfully prepared. It’s not fancy, but it is high-end. The wine list is naturally inclined and full of gems, as well as being reasonably priced. I really recommend taking the counter seats for the full experience.

The combination of setting, a relaxed (and very cool vibe), plus precision cooking and great wine, is irresistible. Lucky Margate.
