Doran Vineyards Ayra Family Reserve 2024 Voor Paardeberg, South Africa
13% alcohol. This is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc, fermented and matured in stainless steel. It’s fruity and really well balanced with nice texture to the sweet pear and yellow plum fruit, with a touch of citrus. Juicy and detailed with a fine spiciness on the finish. These two varieties work well here, with the ripe Sauvignon adding a tropical element and then Chenin keeping things fresh. 88/100

13.5% alcohol. Wild ferment in older oak. This is a very fresh and fruit-forward Chenin, with apple, pear and white peach fruit. There’s a hint of spiciness from the older oak, and a nice texture with subtle notes of nuts and toast, finishing quite rich and layered. Nice purity here. 90/100

10% alcohol. Grenache Noir. Pale pink in colour, this is a really fresh rosé with low alcohol and good acidity. It’s quite stony and mineral with nice brightness to the fruit. Mandarin and redcurrant here with a lemony brightness, showing nice fruit purity. 88/100

14% alcohol. Wild ferment, and aged in older oak for 16 months. This is really fresh, juicy and focused offering pure red cherry and berry fruits with lovely weight. There’s a raspberry crunch and lovely brightness, and also some wild strawberry and aniseed. None of the dark side of Pinotage here! Joyful and easy to drink, in a lighter style, but not lacking flavour. 92/100

14% alcohol. This is Cabernet Sauvignon aged 12 months in barrel. A variety not normally associated with this region, this is bright and supple with nice berry fruits and some fine green hints. It’s juicy and appealing showing nice fruit purity, with good acidity keeping things bright. Supple and expressive with plenty of drinkability, and a bit of tannic crunch on the finish. 89/100

14% alcohol. Shiraz, fermented wild, and then 16 months’ maturation in barrel. This is juicy and berryish with nice bright cherry and plum fruit, as well as some spicy, tarry hints. Fruit-focused and pure, this is supple and vivid, with lots of drinkability. This could age in interesting ways, as it’s quite compressed and tight now. 91/100
